Southern Paris - Gateway or resort on its own?

Situated on the south side of Paris, Vanves is a very attractive suburb of the city. Dating back to the Gallo-Roman period, the history of Vanves is two thousand years old. Many buildings, including the church of St. Remy and the castle of the princes of Condé, now Lycée Michelet, witness to its rich past. It has a delightful town square - the Place de la Republique - where the Town Hall is situated. There are thrice-weekly markets where over 50 traders sell everything from local food specialities of meat, fish, game and cheese through to Italian and Asian products and clothing. There is also a special "Marches de Terroirs" that takes place annually in the town square. Surprisingly, Vanves also has its own theatre, which hosts the annual Festival of Contemporary Dance. For those wanting a peaceful moment to themselves, a stroll in the municipal park in the sunshine will enliven the spirit. Of course, being so close to the centre of Paris, it is also really easy to access all the sights, sounds and tastes of the French capital. Just hop onto the metro at the Porte de Vanves stop, and in just a few minutes you could be standing outside Notre Dame Cathedral.
