Exotic, Cosmopolitan and Lively
These three words sum up the port city of Marseilles. Founded as a Greek settlement in the 7th century BC, it was seized by the Romans in 49 BC and became the entrance to the west for oriental trade. Today Marseilles is France's largest port and second largest city and it has close links with North Africa and the Middle East. Narrow stepped streets, quiet squares and fine 18th century façades combine with modern boulevards and striking modern architecture. The old harbour now only welcomes small boats but it has a renowned fish market. While in the city make sure that you try the bouillabaisse (fish stew) which is truly authentic here. One place that shouldn't be missed on a visit to Marseilles is the Chateau D'If (Castle of Yew). Built in 1524, this formidable fortress stands on a tiny island 2 km southwest of the port. Alexandre Dumas' fictional Count of Monte Cristo was supposed to have been imprisoned here. Other attractions include Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde, Abbaye St-Victor, Cathedrale de la Major and the Vieille Charite (an old almshouse now a museum). Whatever your reason for visiting Provence or Marseille, the Aparthotels make the perfect long or short-term place to stay.
