Explore the unique delights of the Nord area: a region with a unique identity.
Nord is a region in the far north of France. It has strong Flemish roots and as a result Nord is the only French region in which a Dutch dialect (French Flemish) is spoken along with French as a native language, which gives the area a unique flavour and culture. The area's main attractions are the city of Lille, for its cultural offerings such as the Flemish baroque masterpiece of the Old Stock Exchange, which dominates the main square, 'Le Grand Place'. For anyone with an interest in art, some great works of Goya, Donatello and Veronese are held at the Palais des Beaux Arts in the city. Lille has many more galleries worth a visit if you were to enjoy a longer stay with an Adagio Aparthotel.
For attractions outside Lille, Roubaix is worth a visit, the town, once a textiles city, has an interesting heritage of textile mills and urban architecture and its La Piscine art gallery has a fine collection of French 20th century art, located in a splendid art-deco swimming pool. Art lovers will further be drawn to the Matisse museum in the south of the region, situated in Le Cateau, the birthplace of the great impressionist; the museum itself holds a great display of his work. In the north of the region, Dunkirk holds an annual carnival in February which is tremendously popular, despite the northern European winters, and in the summer the area surrounding Dunkirk is blessed with expansive, sandy, beaches, making the Nord department an ideal location for those staying within an Adagio serviced apartment.
