      Munich, much more than Oktoberfest

There is much more to Munich than just Oktoberfest. The modern city is also a major hub for the finance and publishing industries. Founded in medieval times around 1158, Munich is the capital of Bavaria. The city is an inspiring mix of historic buildings and impressive modern architecture. After the Second World War, the town rebuilt a lot of its historic buildings but also added some landmark new architecture. At its heart is the Marienplatz, with the Marian column in its centre and from there numerous important buildings and attractions fan out. The Peterskirche is the oldest church in the inner city and there are numerous other Renaissance, Baroque and Roccoco churches here. The large Residenz palace complex, started in 1385, on the edge of Munich’s Old Town is one of Europe’s most significant museums of interior decoration. There are several reminders of Bavaria’s royal past, with two palaces and four royal avenues in the city. Munich is famous for its wheat beer, a speciality of Bavaria that all the breweries in Bavaria exhibit at Oktoberfest, which despite its name happens mostly in September. The Viktualienmarkt is Munich’s most popular market for fresh food and delicatessen foods and the city is also especially famous for its Christmas markets which occur in the 3 weeks before Christmas.
