Paris' Louvre Museum is one of the capital's most-visited attractions. Millions of tourists throng in every year to admire its displays. It might not be the biggest museum in the world, but the Louvre Museum houses such a richness of collections that it would be unimaginable to come to Paris without visiting this famous centre of global culture.
The collections in Paris' Louvre Museum are incredibly rich: from Oriental antiquities to collections of Islamic arts, from Egyptian antiquities to works from Medieval times, not to mention the vast collection of paintings dating from the early Renaissance period through to modern times, or the graphic arts section. Over 4000 years of history can be on display at any one time! It is also worth visiting The Louvre Museum for its architecture, testimony to centuries past: the Egyptian department leads on to the medieval foundations of the building which was the centre of royal power for the major part of the Middle Ages.
Preparing for your visit
The Louvre Museum is open every day except Tuesdays, from 9am to 6pm. And on Wednesdays and Fridays the museum stays open in the evening up until 9.45pm. Entry to the museum is free on the first Sunday of each month from October to March. The standard entrance fee to the museum is 12 euros. Audioguides are available to help visitors learn more about the objects in the permanent collections. This service costs 5 euros.
You can also join a guided tour. These usually last about an hour and a half, and enable you to more thoroughly explore a particular department. It would be impossible to visit the whole of the museum in one go. However, armed with a plan of the various collections and with an audioguide, a full day's visit should enable you to get a good general idea of the museum.
