Aix en Provence was founded in 103 BC by the Romans, but reached its peak in the 15th century during the reign of "Good King" René. He can be seen in the 13th century Gothic Cathédrale de St-Sauveur. Aix has been called the city of a thousand fountains and three of the best are situated along the Cours Mirabeau, including the Rotonde fountain, which at 12 meters high, is a real landmark of the city that attracts millions of visitors each year. On one side of the elegant tree-lined Cours Mirabeau are beautiful 17th and 18th century buildings and on the other side, are shops and cafes that are so much a part of the city's social life. The Old Town is centred on the Place de l'Hotel de Ville, with its colourful flower market. An Opera Festival takes place every year in late June and July, and performances are held in several venues around the town. Outside of the town is the Mont Sainte-Victoire which can be reached by car, or on foot using a wooded path that leads to the summit. It was a favourite haunt of the artist, Paul Cézanne, throughout his life. Whatever your reasons, for visiting Provence, the Aparthotel in Aix is the perfect place for a long or short-term stay.
